What Can I Expect After Needle Core Breast Biopsy?

Needle core biopsy is a common procedure for obtaining breast tissue. A breast biopsy is recommended if your doctor finds suspicious results in a mammogram or if a lump or thickening of tissue is found in the area.

What Is a Needle Core Biopsy?

The procedure involves a surgeon placing a thin, hollow needle in the breast tissue to gather samples. These samples, each about the size of a grain of rice, are then analyzed in a laboratory.

Side Effects

After the procedure, you may notice some minor side effects. These can include bruising, swelling, infection, bleeding or altered breast appearance, based on how much tissue was removed.

Aftercare

Following the biopsy, the area will be bandaged. An ice pack should be applied to reduce swelling. A non-aspirin pain reliever can be taken for any pain or discomfort.

Resuming Activity

Recommendations are to rest for the remainder of the day after your biopsy procedure. However, you should be able to resume regular activities by the next day.

Results

Biopsy results will likely be available within three days. If the results are normal, no further testing is needed, unless doctors have a difference of opinion. If the results are positive, a treatment plan will be developed by your doctors.
