House rabbits love living indoors with human companions.

House rabbits receive the benefit of living indoors with human companionship rather than living in an outdoor hutch with little interaction. Even being housed indoors does not guarantee a flea-free pet. Should an infestation arise, following a few simple steps can rid the home of the invasive parasite.

  1. Types

    • Flea treatments are available in the form of powders, sprays, spot treatments, flea combs and flea collars. Whether it is safe to use these products on rabbits is a matter of debate even among veterinary professionals.

    • Some of the less costly flea sprays and spot treatments use the pesticide pyrethrin--which, according to veterinarian Marianne Brick, is too dangerous for use on rabbits.

    Ingredients

    • The active ingredients in sprays, powders, spot treatments and collars are pesticides.

    Considerations

    • The entire house should be treated in the event of a flea infestation. Vacuum carpets and upholstered furniture daily and consider investing in a household spray that kills fleas and flea eggs.

    Warning

    • Never use a flea collar on a rabbit. Flea collars are filled with chemicals, and dosage is based on larger animals such as cats and dogs.
