Job Description for a Senior Public Relations Officer

The role of a Senior Public Relations Officer is rooted in communicating clear and consistent messages to a company or organization's external constituents. Although the facets of the position may vary, she is involved in ensuring that the company is best represented to others, and making sure others within the company do the same.

  1. Determine Message and Campaigns

    • What are the company's strong points, and how should those points be shared externally? The Senior Public Relations Officer of a company or organization will be responsible for determining how to get those points communicated consistently and through various media.

    Set Outreach Strategy

    • The Senior Public Relations Officer will create strategy about getting out essential information, and will disseminate such information throughout their department. He will ensure that key messages all hit upon essential points, and that the message is consistent no matter who communicates it.

    Spokesperson for Company

    • The Senior Public Relations Officer may act as the chief spokesperson for the company or organization. She will speak on the organization's behalf in response to media inquiries. The Senior Public Relations Officer may also script messages for an executive when the executive acts in a spokesperson capacity.

    Crisis Communication

    • Along with being a spokesperson, the Senior Public Relations Officer will organize external communication in the event of a corporate crisis. He will communicate information about how to respond to external parties to the entire company, and will most likely be a lead in communicating to such parties. The officer will carefully determine what information about the crisis can be shared, and how it should be stated.

    Plan Large-scale Events and Meetings

    • Senior Public Relations Officers may have some event and meeting responsibilities, or they be directly supervise the employee who does. If the event is one in which large numbers of attendees will be from outside the company, she is more apt to be involved to ensure the messages being presented are consistent with the company's mission and campaigns.

    Social Media Strategy

    • More and more, a Senior Public Relations Officer is responsible in part for the organization's social media strategy: what platforms will be used, how communications via such platforms will take place, and if information will break (be released first) there or through traditional media sources.
