Kalanchoe Plant Information

The Kalanchoe plant, also known as Kalanchoe blossfeldiana, is a perennial shrub that is native to Madagascar. They require little care and are excellent flowering pot plants. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Description

    • The Kalanchoe plant can grow up to 1.5 feet. The flowers are yellow, pink or red. The seeds are extremely small.

    Climate

    • The Kalanchoe plant thrives in USDA Hardiness zones 10 to 11. It grows well in full sunlight. 65 to 68 degrees Fahrenheit is the ideal temperature for nighttime and 75 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit is the ideal temperature for the daytime.

    Soil Condition

    • The soil should be well-draining and high in organic matter. A 1 to 1 mixture of peat and perlite is ideal. The pH should be 6.0 to 6.5.

    Bloom Season

    • Kalanchoe plants bloom mid-October to mid-March. From March to October, a black cloth should cover the plant for 14 hours each day. This will help initiate flower growth in the winter.

    Potting

    • The ideal pots for kalanchoe plants are 4- or 6-inch pots. One cutting is enough for a 4-inch pot. Two cuttings are required for a 6-inch pot.
