Guidelines for Building a Successful Resume

A resume is more than just a summary of your work experience and skills; it is your first opportunity to impress potential employers. Following these guidelines will help you develop a successful resume by improving its content and overall appearance.

  1. Conduct Research

    • Research potential employers and career information, then make a list of the special skills and advanced training you have that will set you apart from other job seekers.

Create a Clear and Concise Resume

    • Successful resumes are easy to follow, to the point and well written. Check your grammar and spelling, and use bold, italics or bullet points to call attention to the important information (name, headings and job titles). Avoid adding unnecessary words or phrases.

    Use Qualifying Information

    • Edit your resume to fit each job. Employers often seek people with a unique set of skills, so it's important to include information that will help you meet the employer's requirements.

    Highlight Accomplishments

    • Describe your career accomplishments and the ways you have helped previous employers save money, increase efficiency or improve their policies. Use numbers and percentages to grab the reader's attention.

    Use Keywords

    • Employers will use software programs to scan your resume for keywords. Identify resume keywords by reviewing job descriptions and employment ads--and incorporate those keywords into your resume.
