Can Garlic Bulbs Be Frozen?

Can Garlic Bulbs Be Frozen? thumbnail
Garlic bulbs can be preserved by freezing.

Like so many other fruits and vegetables, garlic bulbs that are not needed immediately can be stored long-term in the freezer. There are several different approaches to freezing garlic. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Container

    • Garlic should be frozen in an airtight container to prevent its strong smell from permeating other foods in the freezer.

    Whole Cloves

    • Whole cloves can be stored unpeeled in the freezer, then removed as needed.

    Chopped Garlic

    • Garlic can be chopped, then put into a container for freezer storage. Portions of the chopped, frozen garlic can then be broken off for cooking.

    Garlic Pureed With Oil

    • Pureeing whole peeled garlic cloves with oil (two parts oil for one part garlic) in a blender or food processor, then putting the mixture into a container and transferring it straight into the freezer, will result in softer frozen garlic. Because the garlic is softer, it is easier to take small amounts of it as needed.

    Storage Outside the Freezer

    • Fresh garlic bulbs can also be stored in a dry area that is cool--about 60 degrees Fahrenheit. Keeping the bulbs in a mesh bag ensures adequate ventilation. Under these conditions, the bulbs can last three to five months.
