What Rock Is Used in a Hydroponics System?

Hydroponic gardening is a form of growing plants in oxygenated, nutrient-enriched water without the use of soil. With this method, rock is used in place of soil to anchor the roots. There are several different types of rocks that are commonly used for hydroponic gardening.

Rock Wool or Mineral Wool

This particular stone is advantageous because of its ability to hold water and air. It is also light weight.

Expanded Perlite

Expanded perlite is often chosen for its ability to support plant growth. It is free draining and has limited ability to hold water. It can, however, be mixed with other rocks to increase water retention.

Vermiculite

Vermiculite is not typically used by itself for hydroponic gardening. It can, however, be mixed with perlite to aid in water retention.

Expanded Clay

Expanded clay is light-weight and pH neutral. It is also able to adequately support plants throughout the growth process.

Sand

Sand is sometimes used because it can be easily obtained. It is not the best option because it doesn't drain well, is heavy and is difficult to clean.
