Early Childhood Lesson Plan on Fire Safety

Preschool children are old enough to begin learning how to prevent fires and how to stay safe during them. At this age, students already have a keen interest in firefighters and fire engines. Use that interest to teach them something that could be lifesaving.

Significance

Preschool-aged children are especially vulnerable to injuries and death from fires. Teaching young children about fire safety, fire hazards and what do in a fire can save lives.

Time Frame

Fire safety should be reviewed and taught each year. October, which is fire safety month, is a good time to teach a fire safety unit in early childhood.

Features

For preschoolers, teach them how to "stop, drop and roll" during a fire and let them practice. Also explain how to get out of a building that is on fire without trying to "hide" from the fire and smoke. In addition, emphasize that playing with matches and lighters is dangerous.

Types

You can teach fire safety through reading books, doing arts and crafts activities and discussing and acting out different scenarios. Contact your local fire department to arrange a field trip or to have firefighters come to visit your classroom. Many have fire safety programs that they take into schools.

Considerations

Be sure to send home fire safety information to your students' parents. Encourage them to plan escape routes and designate a meeting place. Parents and teachers should work together to help young children be safe during a fire.
