Nerve Damage Due to Ruptured Disc

A ruptured or herniated disc occurs along the spine when the outer shell (annulus) of the disc cartilage cracks and the jelly-like nucleus leaks out. This can damage spinal nerves, which can cause pain, numbness and weakness. The nerves and ruptured disc can heal with proper treatment.

  1. Significance

    • It is important to treat a ruptured disc and damaged nerve right away. If the injury gets worse, surgery may be necessary. Rest is particularly important at the inception of the injury.

    Cervical Symptoms

    • Ruptured discs and nerve damage in the cervical, or neck, area can create pain and numbness in the shoulders, arms and hands.

    Lumbar Symptoms

    • A ruptured disc in the lumbar, or lower back, region can pinch the sciatic nerve. This can cause radiating pain and numbness down the buttocks and legs to the feet and toes. Nerve damage from ruptured or herniated lumbar discs can also cause leg weakness and even a loss of bladder or bowel control.

    Effects of Treatments

    • Generally, ruptured discs and nerve damage will heal with treatments such as anti-inflammatory medications (like ibuprofen), ice, heat, massage and exercise. Ice should be used the first couple of days to control the initial swelling.

    Time Frame

    • With proper treatment and rest, a ruptured disc and nerve pain can usually heal within six to 10 weeks.
