Side Effects
-
The side effects of minocycline are upset stomach, headache, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, sore throat, dizziness and sensitivity to sunlight. Some of these side effects are rare but important to consider before taking minocycline.
Health Risks
-
Before starting treatment with minocycline, speak with your dermatologist about the potential risks. Minocycline is associated with an increased risk of hepatitis and lupus erythematosus. In Great Britain, the Committee on Safety of Medicines received reports of patients being diagnosed with hepatitis related to minocycline use. Between 1986 and 1994, approximately 16 reports of hepatitis were related to the use of minocycline, and 11 reports of lupus erythematosus were related to minocycline treatment. However, these numbers of reports were low.

Other Potential Risks
-
Rare but serious side effects are associated with minocycline, such as liver and/or kidney disease.
Avoiding Risks and Side Effects
-
Talk to your dermatologist about other drugs or antibiotics that you may be taking. Some drugs may negatively interact with minocycline. Be honest with your dermatologist about any health issues and discuss whether minocycline might be right for you. If you do experience side effects, contact your dermatologist.
Follow Instructions
-
Your dermatologist will advise you to take minocycline a half an hour before you go to bed. Do not take it right before you go to bed, because it may not dissolve properly. This might result in a stomach ache or cause gastroesophageal ulceration.
