Can Mobic Affect Your Sleep?

Can Mobic Affect Your Sleep? thumbnail
Mobic is prescribed to treat inflammation caused by arthritis.

Mobic, also known as Meloxicam, is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) prescribed to relieve pain and inflammation related to arthritis, says rheumatologist Dr. Tina Bunch. Instructions for this medication should be followed closely due to serious potential side effects, some of which may directly or indirectly affect sleep.

  1. Sleep Disorders

    • Side effects related directly to sleep include dizziness, drowsiness, extreme tiredness, mood changes, or an inability to sleep due to other painful side effects.

    Cardiac/Circulatory Side Effects

    • Serious potential cardiac and circulatory side effects include heart attack, stroke, high blood pressure, heart failure, internal bleeding, and anemia. Several of these may cause tiredness and an inability to feel rested after sleep.

    Gastrointestinal Side Effects

    • Potential gastrointestinal side effects include ulcers in the stomach and intestines, stomach pain, constipation, diarrhea, tarry stool, gas, blood in the urine, nausea, and vomiting. Many of these will interrupt sleep or cause discomfort that prevents sleep.

    Skin Reactions

    • Possible skin reactions include rash, hives, swelling, numbness, blisters, peeling, yellowing, and itchiness. Each of these may make sleeping comfortably difficult.

    Organ Disorders

    • Kidney failure, liver failure, difficulty breathing or swallowing, asthma, and swelling of the tongue, eyes, or throat are possible in the event of overdose. These prevent sleep, promote exhaustion, and may be fatal.

    Contact Your Doctor

    • In the event that you experience any of these side effects, or any conditions not listed that seem unusual, contact your doctor immediately. A low dosage of this NSAID is considered safe, but any potential side effects may be life threatening-especially if they are ignored.
