Does Phototherapy Treatment Work for Acne?

Medical experts use phototherapy, exposure to ultraviolet rays for therapeutic purposes, in the treatment of premature infants and patients suffering from seasonal disorders. It has also been used for skin disorders, prompting dermatologists to study it to determine its effectiveness for the treatment of acne. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Types

    • Phototherapy treatment for acne includes the use of pulsed dye laser (PDL), intense pulsed light (IPL), and light-emitting diodes (LED).

    Function

    • Phototherapy heats the skin, killing the bacteria that cause acne and reducing acne inflammatory lesions. The heat stimulates the collagen in the skin to tighten, removing acne scarring.

    Does it Work?

    • According to the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology, four weeks of phototherapy using a combination of red light and blue light produced a 69 percent reduction in inflammatory acne lesion count. Acne lesion count was reduced by 90 percent with the use of PDL, 41.7 percent with IPL and 35.3 percent with LED.

    Severity of acne

    • All types of acne, including the most severe nodular and cystic acne, benefit from the use of phototherapy treatments.

    Considerations

    • Side effects such as pain, redness, and crusting or darkening of the skin may be experienced after phototherapy treatments.
