There are a variety of chemicals used in shampoo and soap products that may be dangerous to your health and to the environment. According to The Real Essentials, these chemicals can be absorbed through your skin and scalp and can accumulate in your body. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Liver/Kidneys

    • Diethanolomine (DEA) is found in shampoos and soaps. According to The Real Essentials, it may be responsible for damage to the liver, kidneys and other organs.

    Immune System

    • Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) is used in most cleaning products, including shampoos and soaps. According to The Real Essentials, it can cause damage to your immune system and skin inflammation.

    Environment

    • According to Salon.com, a minimum of 350 million gallons of shampoo (not to mention soap) with its chemicals are washed down drains in the U.S. each year, with many of them flowing into freshwater systems. This results in damage to fish populations.

    Nerve Damage

    • The Real Essentials indicates that DEA may also cause nerve damage in your spinal cord and brain. It is one of the most commonly used ingredients in personal care products.

    Gastrointestinal Problems

    Considerations

    • Other dangerous chemicals found in soaps and shampoos include phthalates and parabens, according to the Environmental Working Group. Additional health problems that can result from the numerous chemicals in these products include anemia, contact dermatitis, skin cell growth inhibition, depression and eye damage.
