Dry Feet in Children

Children usually have smooth skin. However, sometimes the feet of little children can become dry. This is a common and easily treatable problem. Occasionally, it is a symptom of another health issue.

About Dry Feet

Children sometimes exhibit dry feet, especially in the winter time. The feet can appear dry, and the skin on the heels may be worse than any other part of the feet.

Symptoms

Skin on dry feet may appear flaky and will feel dry to the touch. A child with dry feet may also have cracked or bleeding skin on the heels and edges of the feet.

Causes

Dehydration or dry air can cause dry feet in children. Dry feet are also a symptom of diabetes, but a child with diabetes will also exhibit symptoms other than just dry feet.

Treatment

Staying hydrated and humidifying the air can significantly help dry feet. Covering the feet with lotion and then covering the feet with socks and properly fitting shoes can also help to treat dry feet in children.

Prevention

If you have a child who seems to be prone to having dry feet, use lotion on her feet twice a day, and have her wear socks. Walking around barefoot can make the problem worse.
