Pressure washers come in hot or cold water models. The hot water units use less water to clean surfaces, relying instead on heat to increase efficiency, but are more expensive to purchase and operate than the more popular cold water units.

Most cold water pressure washers use two to four gallons of water per minute (gpm) at 1000 to 4000 lbs. per square inch (psi). An average garden hose uses water at five to ten gpm at only 30 to 50 psi.
