What Is a Croton Flower?

Crotons (Codiaeum variegatum) are a popular variety of houseplant due to their resilience and the variety of tropical colors available in different species of the plant. Some crotons flower, but many household varieties will not. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Features

    • Crotons produce bright, tropical foliage with stiff leaves that point upwards; occasionally, they will produce colorful star-shaped flowers.

    Types

    • There are over 750 species of Croton that are organized into varieties including the Broad Leaf Croton, Oak Leaf Croton, Spiral Leaf Croton, Small leaf Croton, and Interrupted Leaf Croton.

    Care

    • Crotons require a hot, humid atmosphere, moderate sunlight, and frequent watering in order to thrive. Leaves will slope downward if under-watered.

    • Croton plants are originated in Malaysia; there, they can grow up to twenty feet tall.

    • Crotons are highly poisonous plants, so never keep them in spaces where animals or small children may eat them.
