A digital weather station is an outdoor electronic device that not only measures temperature, but also gives a reading for wind speed, wind direction, rainfall, humidity, and barometric pressure.

  1. New Development

    • Although the old-fashioned rain gauge, outdoor thermometer, and anemometer can still be purchased at your local hardware store, many people are switching over to the ease and comfort of using a digital weather station, which can be read from the comfort of your living room.

    Minimum Components

    • A basic digital weather station should contain apparatus to measure temperature, humidity, and wind speed whereas a top-of-the-line model might also be able to read barometric pressure, rainfall, and wind direction. Cost will be somewhat dependent on many weather attributes the station can read.

    Wireless vs. Wired

    • The information gathered by the station at its remote location can be sent to the central unit in your living room by one of two means, wired or wireless.

    Price Range

    • Expect to pay between $200 and $500 for a state-of-the-art weather station that is reliable and accurate. Of course, wireless models will be more expensive (approximately $100 more) than wired ones. Some simpler models can be had for just under $200, but there are many cheaper models on the market, which are not as accurate.

    Data Rich

    • One of the advantages of digital technology is that a lot of weather information can be stored internally, and you can keep accurate records over a long period of time. You can even establish trends for certain weather events.
