Esoteric Meaning of Numbers
The Greek philosopher and mathematician Pythagoras is the father of both mathematics and esoteric numerology. Pythagoras believed that there is a particular order to the universe and that each number has an esoteric, or secret, meaning.

Pythagoras' School
-
Pythagoras, who was born around 600 B.C., established a school for the study of mathematics, music, astronomy and philosophy, along with esoteric studies. Numerologist, therapist and author Lynn Buess said Pythagoras taught "the relationship between man and the divine laws as reflected in the mathematics of numbers."
Number and Letter Codes
-
In numerology, the numbers one through nine correspond to a particular letter. For instance, the number one corresponds to the letter "A", while the letter "I" corresponds to the number nine. The letter J corresponds again to the number one and so on.

Calculating Birth Numbers
-
Numerology claims to enable people to understand their life lessons by analyzing the numbers in their birth dates. For example, if your birthday is Aug. 21, 1920, you would write the digits as 8/21/1920 and then add the digits, which total 23. The digits of 23 are added together to produce the number five. The number five represents freedom and change.
Calculating Birth Name Numbers
-
Each letter of the birth name can be coded and analyzed to determine the soul's purpose and how a person's personality is expressed in daily life. The digits of Mary Smith would be 4, 1, 9, 7, 1, 4, 9, 2 and 8. Adding the digits produces 45, which would be reduced to nine. Nine is associated with creativity and compassion.
Master Numbers
-
Some numbers have special significance. Normally, 11 would be reduced to two, 22 would be reduced to four and 33 would be reduced to six. But 11, 22 and 33 are Master Numbers and are considered extraordinarily powerful, with special characteristics.
