Is Lichen Simplex Similar to Psoriasis?

Psoriasis is the most common autoimmune disease in the United States, according to the Nation Psoriasis Foundation (NPF). The chronic, inflammatory, non-contagious skin disorder affects about 7.5 million Americans. In contrast, lichen simplex, also called neurodermatitis, is a hard-to-break cycle of scratching and itching.

  1. Skin

    • Lichen simplex makes the skin look thick and leathery, according to the Mayo Clinic, while psoriasis-affected skin is typically raised, red, and covered with silvery-white scales. Both conditions cause itching.

    Treatment

    • Lichen simplex responds to over-the-counter ointments and may improve once any anxiety associated with the problem is relieved. Psoriasis is more complicated to treat. Physicians typically try a variety of remedies, including ointments, light therapy, and systemic and biologic drugs, to treat psoriasis.

    Cause

    • The Mayo Clinic says the exact cause of lichen simplex is unknown---likewise for psoriasis. Clinic staff say that in some cases lichen simplex is associated with other skin disorders, including psoriasis.

    Stress

    • Lichen simplex often appears as a single patch and can affect the genitals. It may come and go according to stress or anxiety levels. The same applies to psoriasis.

    Ages

    • Neurodermatitis is most common for people aged 30 to 50 and affects more women than men. Psoriasis affects men and women equally and commonly appears at a younger age.

    Cures

    • Psoriasis has no complete cure today. Lichen simplex skin can return to normal once the scratching stops, even though it may be months later, according to the Mayo Clinic.
