A brigade is a high level military unit.

An army brigade is a military unit sometimes called a group or regiment that is composed of multiple battalions. It is commanded by a colonel or a brigadier general. A brigade is large enough to perform independent operations.

  1. Military Organization

    • The U.S. military consists of three departments--Army, Navy, and Air Force. Each department is composed of small military units that are combined into increasingly larger military units. A brigade is a large unit within this structure and is commanded by a senior officer.

    Battalion

    • A battalion is a unit capable of self-sustaining operations. It is composed of four to six companies (300 to 1,000 troops) and is commanded by a lieutenant colonel.

    Brigade Composition

    • A modern army brigade consists of a field artillery battalion, engineer battalion and combat service support battalion. Brigade size varies from 1,500 to 3,200 troops. As of 2009, there are 33 combat brigades in the U.S. Army.

    Division

    • A division is composed of three to five brigades and consists of 10,000 to 16,000 troops. It is commanded by a major general. As of 2009, there are ten divisions in the active U.S. Army.

    Corps

    • A corps consists of two or more divisions. It is commanded by a lieutenant general and consists of more than 20,000 troops. In 2009, there are four corps that comprise the active U.S. Army.
