A drug detox specialist interviews potential clients to determine their eligibility for treatment programs. They also compose summaries of treatments, develop plans for follow-up care and occasionally conduct in-house group sessions with their clients.
Education

Applicants for drug detox specialist usually qualify for the position with Associate degrees or certification in behavioral or social sciences. These classes include counseling skills and theories, studies in addictions and crisis intervention.

A successful applicant is required to understand addiction and human anatomy, have counseling and testing skills and be knowledgeable about human psychology.
Pay

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average annual salargy is $21,000 for detox specialists. However, those who are employed in family service agencies may have higher salaries.
Work Hours

While many drug detox specialists work normal shifts, there are times when they may have to be "on call," or available to work other hours on very short notice. This sometimes occurs when there is under staffing on a specific shift or in the event of emergencies.
