Psychologists have long relied on psychological tests, or assessments, to determine a patient's diagnosis. Depending on the type of disorder being tested for, psychological tests, or assessments, can take many forms.

Psychologists administer assessments in a controlled environment. Tests consist of questions asked verbally, on paper or on a computer.
Intelligence

The most popular assessments of intelligence are the Weschler tests, with versions for preschool age, school age children and adults.

Objective

Psychologists mainly use the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) and the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI-2) as objective, question/answer tests for assessing personality disorders.
Projective

Psychologists also use the Rorschach (ink blot) test and the Draw a Person: Screening Procedure for Emotional Disturbance to test for personality disorders. Unlike objective tests, the patient does not select from predetermined answers, but provides answers in his own words.
