Green Anole Eye Infection

Green anoles are the most common type of lizards that are kept as pets. They are inexpensive to buy and care for. They do however have many common health problems such as eye infections.

  1. Symptoms

    • Common symptoms include swelling, crust formation, and inability to open the eye. Runny eyes can be a symptom of a respiratory infection, so take note of the consistency of any discharge.

    Causes

    • There are many things that can cause an eye infection in a green anole. It could be minor as simply having some sort of debris stuck in the eye. It could also be more serious, involving parasites, bacteria, fungus or a congenital problem. You will want to arrange a visit to the vet to get a diagnosis. Blindness is common in green anoles and treatment should start as soon as possible.

    Treatment

    • The most common treatment is an antibiotic. Most likely this would be administered directly to the affected area with use of eye drops or ointment.

    Complications

    • Delaying treatment could have dire consequences for your green anole. There is a risk of loss of part or all of the eye structure, as well as the infection spreading.

    Prevention

    • Check your green anole's eyes regularly for abnormalities. Keeping its cage clean and free of debris can prevent anything foreign from getting in its eyes. Knowing proper care of your green anole is important as well. Do your own research and ask for care instructions from the individual or store where your green anole was purchased.
