Information on a Hybrid Prius
The Toyota Prius hybrid was introduced to the Japanese market in 1997. Three years later, the Prius was available as the first four-door hybrid car in the United States. The hybrid Prius combines battery and gasoline power to reduce fuel costs and emissions.

The hybrid Prius runs on battery power up to 42 mph and while idling. When the car is moving above 42 mph, the gasoline engine kicks in.

The hybrid Prius gets an average of 51 miles per gallon in the city and 48 miles per gallon (mpg) on the highway.

All models of the car have seating for five and 21.6 cubic feet of luggage space. Leg room is 42.5 inches in the front and 36 inches in the back.

The hybrid Prius is available in six colors, including black and five metallic colors: silver, red, blue, tan and gray.

As of 2009, the car had a manufacturer's suggested retail price of $22,400 for the basic model. There are four models available, each with various options.
