Phenobarbital for Seizures in Dogs

Phenobarbital for Seizures in Dogs thumbnail
Phenobarbital is a common medication for treating seizures in dogs.

Phenobarbital is the first-choice drug used to treat seizures in dogs. This medication has proved effective in decreasing the duration and severity of seizure activity. It is also rapidly absorbed and suitable for long-term control of epilepsy.

  1. Identification

    • Phenobarbital is a barbiturate anticonvulsant drug that is not FDA approved, but it is legally prescribed as an extra-label drug for animals. It usually comes in pill form measured in grains.

    Time Frame

    • Phenobarbital is a fast-acting drug. Its therapeutic peak levels are generally absorbed within four to eight hours after oral administration.

    Dosage

    • In order to work well, Phenobarbital must be administered every 12 hours. Pills should be given at the same time each day and should never be skipped.

    Side Effects

    • Phenobarbital may cause increased drinking and increased urination, increase in appetite and weight gain, sedation, or, due to its paradoxical effect, anxiety and excitement. It should not be administered to dogs with severe liver disease.

    Considerations

    • Because Phenobarbital is processed by the liver, its long-term use may predispose dogs to liver problems. Routine blood monitoring of liver functionality is highly recommended.
