There are a variety of envelope shapes and sizes.

Envelopes are manufactured in a wide variety of sizes and styles. It's important to select the proper envelope before creating your card or announcement, or you might be left with an improperly sized envelope for mailing.

  1. Announcement Envelopes

    • Announcement envelopes are typically used for greeting cards, invitations and announcements and photographs. Sizes for announcement envelopes are designated with the letter "A" followed by a number.

    A2 Specifications

    • An A2 envelope is the smallest of the announcement envelopes. It measures 4 3/8 by 5 3/4 inches. It features side seams and a square flap.

    Baronial Envelopes

    • Baronial envelopes share some of the same size specifications as announcement envelopes. The difference is the construction. Baronial envelopes have diagonal seams and a pointed flap. The 5 ½ baronial envelope is the same size as the A2.

    Colors

    • White, cream and ivory are the most popular colors for announcement and baronial envelopes; however, a wider range of colors is now available. Keep in mind that very bright or very dark colors are more difficult to read.

    Considerations

    • Regardless which size or style envelope you choose, it should be 1/8 inch larger in both dimensions than the contents. The contents for an A2 envelope should be 4 ¼ by 5 ½ inches.
