Toothpaste As an Acne Treatment

Toothpaste may reduce acne.

Toothpaste is a homeopathic treatment for acne. Since it can be over-drying, it is important to limit the amount and number of times you apply toothpaste to your skin.

Type of Toothpaste

It is recommended that you do not use a gel toothpaste or one that contains whitening ingredients, as these may irritate the skin further.

Drying

Toothpaste is very drying on the skin. Over-drying can irritate skin and cause more acne. Only use toothpaste as a spot treatment.

Application

Dab a small amount of toothpaste on your pimple. It may tingle or burn at first. Wash it off after a half hour, or leave it on overnight if it is not too drying. Be aware that it may rub off on your pillow case.

Sulfate

Most toothpastes contain an ingredient called sodium laureth sulphate. Sulfur is used in several acne masks and treatments, such as Proactiv's refining mask, which may be a better option.

Alternatives

If you have problem skin with frequent breakouts, toothpaste is not a good solution. Over-the counter medications that include benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid are far better skin-clearing products.
