Truck Tire Problems

Truck Tire Problems

Though any vehicle can experience tire problems, many conditions associated with bad tires become exaggerated in heavy vehicles like trucks. Trucks can quickly expose manufacturer defects, bad alignment and poor maintenance.

  1. Tires

    • Most modern truck tires are radial types, and use metal reinforcement belts to ensure uniformity. Truck tires also are heavier in construction than car tires, which can increase the vibrational effects of an out-of-round condition.

    Bad Alignment

    • Many problems are caused by bad alignment, which can be diagnosed by noting unusual wear on the tire's tread surface.

    Alignment Problems

    • Most suspensions go out of alignment with wear. Worn/bent tie rod ends, steering arms, ball joints and camber adjusters can all cause uneven wear on tires.

    Sidewall Damage

    • Because of their wide turning circles, trucks are especially prone to sidewall damage by contact with curbs. This damage may take the form of cuts or abrasions in the sidewall, and usually cannot be repaired.

    Re-Treading

    • Heavy trucks that experience tread damage or separation can often have new treads glued on at a fraction the price of a new tire. Re-treading, however, will do nothing for a damaged sidewall.
