Benefit of Using Multiple Subwoofers

A good subwoofer adds to the total experience of your stereo or home theater, adding necessary bass quality. Sometimes two subwoofers can be better than one.

  1. Sound Waves

    • Sound waves move at different frequencies based on the size of the sound wave. High sound waves are closer together while bass sound waves, as are produced through the subwoofers, are more spread out.

    Listening Positions

    • Because bass waves are longer waves, they are perceived at different volumes based on a listener's position from the speaker.

    Amplitude

    • For this reason, certain areas around a subwoofer may be perceived as more bass rich than others. This volume level is called amplitude, which is measured in decibels. You might find that sitting five feet away from the speaker produces little bass while sitting six feet away produces much louder bass tones, as the amplitude is higher.

    Multiple Subwoofers

    • Multiple subwoofers can decrease or eliminate dead pockets by sending more waves throughout the listening space. This can decrease room resonance and improve bass quality by distributing it evenly throughout the room.

    Positioning

    • Subwoofers positioned on opposite walls or corners can manipulate the sound waves to be tighter and more well-defined. Multiple subwoofers can make the listening experience seem more enveloping and panoramic, creating a three-dimensionally sounding space.
