What Over-the-Counter Medicine Can Be Used for Ringworm?

Ringworm is a fungal infection of the skin. It is common in children and teens who play contact sports. Signs of infection include a circular rash with a scaly appearance. Treatment is topical, including creams and shampoos.

Ketoconazole

Ketoconazole is available in your local pharmacy without a prescription as a shampoo and a cream under the brand name Nizoral. Be sure to apply enough to cover the affected area.

Miconazole

Miconazole is available as the brand Micatin in cream or spray form. A small amount of either form should be applied to the affected area twice per day.

Clotrimazole

Clotrimazole is another anti-fungal treatment that can be used for ringworm. It is available as the brands Mycelex and Lotrimin. Apply a small amount twice a day for two to four weeks.

Selsun Blue

Selsun Blue is a medicated shampoo that can be used to treat ringworm on the scalp. The scalp must be washed with it daily for at least two weeks.

Medical Help

See your doctor if the ringworm does not respond to home treatment. You may need a prescription strength anti-fungal agent or a different topical medication.
