Acupressure Points for Dental Pain

There are acupressure points that, when pressed, can result in a dramatic loss of dental pain. Some of these are so effective that there are dentists that use them. One of the best is one that you can easily use at home yourself.

  1. Theory

    • Acupressure uses points along the acupuncture meridians. These are channels along which energy flows, according to Chinese medical theory. By pressing on these points, you can affect the balance of this energy which, in turn, effects all the systems of the body.

    Point Approach

    • One approach to relieving dental pain is to use points that are specifically used for pain relief. The reason they work is not well understood, according to Western medical theory. Many believe that these points work because they affect the nervous system due to their location.

    Meridian Approach

    • Another approach for dental pain is to pick points on the meridians that surround the jaw, the Large Intestine and the Stomach meridians. Points chosen can be on the jaw or points on the hand or foot on the corresponding meridian. With distal points, the theory is that you are drawing the energy down the meridian and away from the jaw pain.

    Points Used

    • The main point used for pain is Large Intestine 4 (He Gu). This is located in the web of the hand between the thumb and forefinger. It is particularly effective for dental pain because of the meridian it is on. Points on the jaw are Stomach (ST) 7 in the hinge, ST 6 at the mandibular angle and ST 3 just below the cheekbone and in a line down from the pupil. A distal point is ST 44 which is between the base of the second and third toes.

    Benefits

    • If you have a dental problem, acupressure is not going to take the place of seeing your dentist. However, using these points can help give some pain relief until the necessary dental procedure can be performed, as well as during the procedure.
