What Is the Density of Neon?

What Is the Density of Neon? thumbnail
Neon has been used in signs since 1910.

An inert gas that makes up about one part in 65,000 of air by volume, neon's density changes predictably with temperature and pressure. Familiar to most people for its use in electric signs, neon is relatively light. And because it's non-flammable, it's safe to work with.

  1. Description

    • Neon is an unreactive, stable chemical element and a colorless gas at normal temperatures. Its low atomic mass of 20.179 means its density is low compared to most other gases.

    History

    • Neon was discovered in 1898 when two British chemists chilled air until it liquefied, then boiled off its components. Its first use as a gas for signs came in 1910.

    Density as Gas

    • At 0 degrees Celsius, neon is in its familiar gas state. Its density is .9 grams per liter. By comparison, air is 1.28 grams per liter at this temperature.

    Density as Liquid

    • Neon becomes a liquid at -246 degrees C. Its density is 1,207 grams per liter, a little denser than room-temperature water.

    Density as Solid

    • At a temperature of -249 degrees C, solid neon's density is 1,444 grams per liter.
