Fluoxetine is a selective serotonin uptake inhibitor (SSRI) that was developed to treat humans for anxiety, depression and other disorders. The most common brand name of this medication for humans is Prozac.

A chemicals in the brain called serotonin is linked to many behaviors. Fluoxetine helps to maintain serotonin levels, which may help control your pet's anxiety and unwanted behaviors.

Many dogs have separation anxiety. Dogs and cats may have behaviors that can be helped with Reconcile. Wendy C. Brooks, DVM, DipABVP, Educational Director for VeterinaryPartner.com, says that it is used to treat anxiety and compulsive and other problem behaviors such as self-mutilation, circling and obsessive licking. It may also treat aggression and itching.

Side Effects

Drowsiness, loss of appetite, upset stomach and lethargy are common side effects. Sudden aggression in pets that were not aggressive before may occur.
