What Are the Dangers of Ebay?

eBay is an e-commerce site that allows consumers to find bargains and make money by selling items to other members. Both activities come with some dangers.

  1. Highjacking

    • Highjacked accounts are ones that have been hacked by a scammer, who then uses the account to list high-dollar items. The money is taken by the scammer, and the items are never delivered. Highjacked accounts are often inactive for long periods, then many expensive items are listed at once.

    Nonperforming sellers

    • A nonperforming seller is one who sells an item and then never ships it. This can happen with users with new eBay accounts who have little or no record of selling items successfully, thereby earning positive feedback.

    Charegebacks

    • There are dangers for sellers, too. Buyers who do chargebacks after they have purchased an item can end up with both the item and their money. There are some seller protections in place from both eBay and PayPal, but sellers must provide proof that an item was shipped.

    Misrepresentation

    • Sellers use the description area of an eBay listing to describe the item and its condition. Some sellers misrepresent the condition of items, selling old or damaged items as new.

    Counterfeits

    • There are counterfeit items for sale on eBay, including fake designer clothing and accessories. Fake software is also a problem.
