Antibiotics for Kidney Infection in Dogs

Antibiotics can be used to treat kidney infections in dogs, but serious risks are involved.

Kidney infections in dogs sometimes can be treated with antibiotics. However, antibiotics can cause more harm than good by overloading the dog's system or even shutting down its kidneys. Other treatments for kidney problems should be considered first.

Antibiotics are used to kill bacteria. This means they kill both good and bad bacteria in dogs.

If your dog's kidney is infected with bacteria, an antibiotic may be prescribed to kill the bacteria. Antibiotics also can be used to kill other bacterial infections in the body while the kidney is suffering.

Types

Tetracycline, gentamicin, and amikacin are some of the common antibiotic names associated with kidney treatment. These antibiotics come with serious risks, however.

Risks

Treating a kidney with antibiotics actually can cause kidney failure. If the dog already has kidney problems, the antibiotics can build up in its system.

Other Treatments

Rather than risking antibiotics, kidney problems sometimes can be treated with fluid injections and dietary changes. Dog owners always should consult a veterinarian for treatment of serious problems such as kidney infections.
