Allergic Reaction to Epsom Salt

Epsom salt, which is known as magnesium sulfate, is used as a laxative, bathing additive and even for soaking aching feet or hands. However, people can suffer allergic reactions to epsom salt when it is used for any of those purposes.

  1. Significance

    • If someone is allergic to epsom salt, they may develop severe reactions either internally or externally. Epsom salts contain sulfur. Anyone who is known to have allergies or severe sensitivities to sulfur should not use epsom salt for any purpose.

    Types of Allergy Symptoms

    • A person who uses epsom salt for a laxative may develop swelling on the face, lips or tongue. They may also develop hives or rashes on their skin.

    Other Types of Allergy Symptoms

    • People who use epsom salt for bathing, detoxing or soaking feet and hands may develop dizziness or have difficulty breathing. These symptoms can also be as a result of using epsom salt internally.

    Considerations

    • Magnesium sulfate contains magnesium, oxygen and sulphur, which is a corrosive element to which certain people can be sensitive. This is especially true for people who are sensitive to strong odors.

    Warning

    • People who have allergic reactions to epsom salt should stop taking it. If their reaction is severe, they need to get medical attention.
