Cash is a perfectly acceptable wedding gift. Traditionally, the couple will use the money to go on a honeymoon or furnish their new home. Cash can also assist in giving the new couple time to budget properly as they merge into one household.

  1. Method and Time Frame

    • Cash should be included in wedding cards addressed to the bride and groom. Guests should give the card to the bride or groom at the reception. If a check is included instead of cash, guests may mail the card to the couple's home after the wedding, preferably soon after the ceremony.

    Amount

Guests opting to give a gift of money should give what they can afford. There is no maximum or minimum for cash gifts.

    Cultural Considerations

    • Most Asian cultures consider money an appropriate wedding gift. In Chinese culture, the color red is also lucky and would be appreciated if represented on the colors of the card.

    Usefulness

    • Even if a couple has a registry and has not asked for money, cash is still an appropriate gift. It is bad etiquette for a couple to ask for gifts outright--especially cash--even if it is really needed.

    Unable to Attend

    • If the guest is unable to attend, he or she is not required to send a gift. A congratulatory card is considered polite. However, an invitee who cannot attend may still send a gift of money.

    Thank-You Cards

    • Couples writing thank-you cards should not mention the amount of money specifically in the note. Instead, they should thank the guest for the gift of money, regardless of the amount or whether it was in the form of a check or cash.
