What Is an Atomizer Bottle?
An atomizer bottle is a dispenser used to apply perfumes, colognes and other fragrances. A typical atomizer bottle contains a spray pump, which helps distribute fragrance in a fine, even mist. Atomizer bottles became common during World War I and have been an important part of the perfume industry since. Does this Spark an idea?

Features
-
Early atomizer bottles were very elaborate and decorative. They worked by means of a bulb attached to tubing that ran inside the bottle. When the bulb was squeezed, fragrance was pulled into the tube to be dispensed by the spray nozzle. Modern atomizers do not require the bulb attachment in order to work.
Uses
-
Atomizer bottles apply fragrance in small, even amounts. Older bottles are collector's items.
-
Types
-
Older atomizer bottles were often made from finely crafted cut glass, ceramic and metal materials. Modern atomizer bottles tend to be simpler in design and less expensive to manufacture, although high-end perfumes may come in more extravagant bottles.
Significance
-
Before the invention of the atomizer, women applied perfumes and colognes by hand. This meant that it was easy to apply too much fragrance, which was (and is) considered to be in poor taste. Atomizer bottles allow consumers far more control over how much fragrance they apply, which is why almost all perfumes today are sold in atomizer bottles.
History
-
Until the turn of the century, perfume bottles, though often beautifully made, were technologically similar to those used by the Egyptians and Romans--they were simply containers with stoppers that you used to dab on perfume. The first atomizer was invented in 1887 by Dr. Allen DeVilbiss. Its intended use was medical, but this technology was soon adopted by the fragrance industry, causing a revolution in perfume application.
