Cultivation
-
Bee balm prospers in any damp soil rich in organic material such as manure, leaf mold or compost. Panorama Red Shade blooms in June through September.
The best method for growing bee balm is to plant it in soil that does not dry out in the summer. It grows best in sun, but can tolerate shade provided that the soil stays damp. It is a perennial plant, but it does not grow well in damp winters. Gardeners can take cuttings of new growth in the spring for replanting; clumps of bee balm should be divided every three to four years to prevent them from becoming bare in the center.
History
-
The plant was introduced to the early American colonists by the Oswego Indians and was used to make tea by the colonists at the time of the Boston Tea Party; the plant is also known as Oswego tea.
-
Fragrance and Height

-
A facial steam can be produced from the leaves of the plant, while potpourri's color and flavor can be enhanced by the leaves and flowers.
