The trillium genus, or group of flowers, originated in North America and Asia. The name trillium comes from the Latin word "tres," or three, and refers to the shape of the flowers. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Types

    • The flowers of sessile Trilliums sit directly upon the leaves of the plant, while small stems elevate the blooms of pedicellate Trilliums above the leaves. There are approximately 43 species of Trillium flowers native to North America, according to Washington State University-Clark County.

    Flowers

    • The flowers of the trillium plant feature three petals of equal size that give the flower a triangular shape. The size of the flower varies from species to species.

    Colors

    • Trilliums come in whites, reds, pinks and purples. The petals of the trillium flower are often one solid color, but sometimes feature two contrasting colors.

    Leaves

    • Like the flowers, the leaves of the trillium also grow in threes and often parallel to the petals of the flowers. The leaves are typically a vibrant green, with shapes varying within different species.

    Geography

    • In the United States, trillium grow wild in every state, except Alaska, Arizona, Hawaii, Nevada, New Mexico and Utah, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
