Mattress covers help protect your mattress and provide added comfort.

There are a number of types of mattress covers and mattress pads, ranging from a basic cotton cover to a 3-inch memory foam-padded mattress cover with hypoallergenic and stain-resistant fabrics. Choosing a mattress cover requires an assessment of your needs and your budget. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Basic Quilted

    • The most basic type of mattress cover is a cotton quilted design that contains a light layer of polyester fill. The mattress cover has elastic around the edges to hold it onto your bed.

    Mattress Protector

    • Some mattress covers are designed only with protection in mind, not comfort. These will often have zippered designs to fully encase your mattress in a thin and durable waterproof casing. Other features may include resistance to dust mites and dander.

    Memory Foam

    • The most high-end mattress covers are memory foam, a synthetic material that changes its shape to fit your body. Memory foam is sensitive to heat and softens around the warm areas of your body.

    Down

    • Also known as featherbeds, down mattress toppers are another way to add comfort to a mattress. They will help to soften the feel of firm mattresses.

    Cost

    • Mattress covers range from about $20 for a basic mattress pad for a twin bed to over $300 for high-end memory foam. Expect about a 10 percent increase in price for each size above twin.
