Early Signs of Multiples in Pregnancy
Every pregnancy is different, but there are early signs to detect multiples in pregnancy. Fast weight gain, severe morning sickness, early fetal movement, extreme fatigue, heart beat detection and high alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) results may be indicators of multiples.
-
Quick weight gain
-
Gaining ten pounds or more in the first trimester may be a sign of carrying multiples.
Severe morning sickness
-
Some women pregnant with multiple babies report extreme morning sickness, and the morning sickness may be more severe than women pregnant with one baby.
-
Early fetal movement
-
Some women expecting multiples report feeling of fetal movements earlier than women expecting one baby. However, there is no medical evidence supporting this claim.
Extreme fatigue and other complaints
-
Extreme fatigue is the biggest complaint among mothers pregnant with multiples. Women carrying multiples may have more intense pregnancy symptoms than women carrying one child.
High AFP and heart beat
-
Doctors associate high AFP results with multiples. If the pregnant woman has high AFP levels, the doctor schedules an early ultrasound to determine multiples. The doctor can hear two heartbeats at 12 weeks.
