What Are the Dangers of Overinflating Tires?

An over-inflated tire makes a vehicle unstable. It also can cause a blow out, which is dangerous not only to the primary vehicle but to those around it.

  1. Blow Out

    • If a tire is over-inflated, it will eventually rupture, or pop, in the same way an over-inflated balloon would pop. This is commonly known as a blow out and can be particularly dangerous if it happens on front wheels.

    Accidents

    • When an over-inflated tire ruptures, control of the vehicle is compromised. The rupture causes the steering wheel to be jerked involuntarily in one direction and the driver might not be able to seize control of the vehicle in time to prevent a traffic accident.

    Damage Costs

    • If the driver is unable to regain control of the vehicle and an accident occurs, as is often the case, he will be responsible for any harm to others and any damage to property or other vehicles.

    Wear and Tear

    • When a tire is over-inflated, the larger area that should be in contact with the ground is lessened. The center of the tread becomes the primary point and receives the entire force of the road. This means less traction and more wear and tear on the tires.

    Other Vehicles

    • An over-inflated tire is dangerous for those driving nearby, as well. If a blow out occurs, pieces of the tire can fly onto the road and cause another driver to swerve and possibly wreck.
