Signs of Roundworm Infection in Children

Roughly four million Americans, mostly in the southeastern United States, and nearly one in four people in developing countries are estimated to have roundworm infection, also known as toxocariasis, according to diagnoseme.com.

  1. Roundworm Infection

    • Roundworm infection denotes the ingestion of the roundworm parasite, which is most commonly found in the intestines of dogs and is excreted in their feces. The parasite is often contracted through ingestion of dirt.

    Signs and Symptoms

    • Most children who are infected by roundworm are asymptomatic. This means that there are no signs or symptoms of infection. When symptoms do present themselves, they usually fall under two categories: larval migration and mechanical effects.

    Larval Migration

    • Larval migration presents itself four to 16 days after ingestion and usually involves respiratory symptoms such as fever, coughing, and wheezing.

    Mechanical Effects

    • Mechanical effects are a result of the activities of fully grown roundworms and include abdominal complaints, small bowel obstruction (especially prominent in children), appendicitis, and pancreatitis.

    Death

    • Deaths as a result of roundworm infection are very rare but can happen as a result of the intestinal blockage caused by a fully grown roundworm. If you suspect roundworm infection, seek the advice of a doctor immediately.
