Treadmill Vs. Eliptical Calorie Burn

The two most popular cardiovascular machines at the gym are the treadmill and the elliptical machine. Which machine burns the most calories? The amount of energy exerted and an individual's body weight determine the calories burned per workout.

  1. Elliptical

    • On an elliptical, intensity can be varied by increasing resistance (making the machine harder to pump) and speed (determined by the individual). A 190-pound individual burns about 490 calories during a 30-minute session on the elliptical.

    Treadmill

    • Treadmill intensity is determined by speed and incline. Both can be set by the individual. A 190-pound individual burns about 364 calories running on a treadmill at no incline at five miles per hour. Incline significantly increases calorie burn.

    Pros

    • An elliptical trainer provides a smoother movement and exerts less stress to the joints. Treadmill exertion is easier to control by increasing speed and incline.

    Cons

    • An individual must push himself to reach the maximum exertion level on an elliptical trainer. It's easier to "go through the motions" than on a treadmill. Treadmills are not recommended for individuals with problem knees or joints.

    Weight Loss

    • To lose one pound, an individual must burn 3,500 more calories than are taken in by food.
