Why Use an Aquarium Canister Filter?

Although aquarium manufacturers offer several types of aquarium filters, many consider canister filters to be the best choice. There are several reasons for this.

  1. Visual Appeal

    • First, canister filters add to the visual appeal of your aquarium by allowing you to install them underneath the tank in order to hide them from view.

    Increased Space

    • Because these filters operate outside the aquarium, they allow the maximum amount of space for fish. They also cause less disturbance in the flow of the water than most filters; an advantage for fish that prefer slow moving water.

    Noise

    • Canister filters have also been known to be significantly quieter than under gravel or power filters, although recent improvements to power filters have helped keep them quiet, too.

    Attachments

    • Canister filters offer a wide variety of options for attachments and modifications, making them easy to customize based on the needs of your aquarium.

    Concerns

    • These filters do present a few disadvantages, the biggest of which is that they are dangerous for spawning fish when improperly installed. They have been known to suck baby fish into the tubing, allowing them to die inside the canister. However, proper installation can avoid this problem altogether.
