Bento boxes originated in Japan.

A well-known part of Japanese food culture, bento boxes are small, compact containers meant to hold an individual serving of rice and a few side dishes. According to JustBento.com, the Japanese word "bento" is used to mean a meal served in a box.

  1. Traditional Construction

    • In ancient times in Japan, people might have transported lunches in natural materials such as leaves or bamboo. Later, some began interweaving strips of bamboo or willow to create boxes called bento.

    As an Art Form

    • During Japan's Edo period, it became common for the well-to-do to carry lavish foods in elaborate tiered boxes for presentation at special occasions. These bento boxes became an art form, especially during the tea ceremony.

    Styles

    • The hangetsu, or half moon container, has been popular for centuries. The chabako (tea box) bento is used for open-air tea ceremonies. The Shokado bento, a square or rectangular lacquered wooden box with four compartments, takes its name from monk and painter Sokado Shojo.

    Presentation of Food

    • Bento boxes may be used in Japanese restaurants to create a beautiful presentation of kaiseki ryori, or artistic seasonal cuisine.

    Modern Bento Boxes

    • In addition to wood, modern materials such as anodized aluminum and plastic may be used in the creation of today's bento boxes.
