A payroll specialist is a professional who prepares salary and hourly rate compensation, bonuses and other types of employment-related payments for employees. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that the demand for payroll specialists will increase by 3 percent through 2016, resulting in the creation of 6,600 new jobs.

    • Payroll specialists typically utilize computer software programs to calculate the amount of pay each employee should receive and what deductions for benefits and taxes need to be subtracted from the pay. Specialists print or prepare paper checks and pay stubs and any electronic files needed for direct deposit of payroll.

    • Most payroll specialists work directly for a particular company, while others work for payroll services that handle all of the pay-related functions for a number of different companies.

    Variations

    • In small offices or companies, payroll specialists may calculate employee pay with an adding machine and write checks and stubs by hand. Payroll specialists are sometimes responsible for mailing tax information at the end of the year, inputting new employees' information into the payroll system and updating names and addresses for existing employees.

    Education

    • While there is no particular education or degree required for payroll specialists, most employers prefer applicants with a high school diploma or GED. Mathematics, organizational skills and the ability to learn computer software programs are necessary for success in the position.

    Compensation

    • In May 2008, the average annual salary for payroll specialists was $35,500, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
