Singapore Business Etiquette

Singapore is characterized by a blend of different cultures and traditions. It is located in Southeast Asia. The country is in a strategic location and is a major center for trade, tourism and communications.

  1. Relationships

    • In all facets of Singaporean life, a person's reputation is held in high regard. When doing business, individuals are expected to have good character and personal dignity. Singaporeans strive for harmonious relationships. Business friendships are based on integrity, good character and honor.

    Dress

    • According to Executive Planet, generally, business casual dress is worn in day-to-day office work in Singapore. For example, long trousers and a shirt would be considered appropriate. Foreign visitors, however, will do well if they dress somewhat above the business casual style. In Singapore, two industries that are more formal than others in dress are banking and finance.

    Handshaking

    • According to MoveAndStay.com, handshaking in Singapore is usually done lightly and softly. This is a stark contrast from the very firm handshakes common to Western cultures.

    Business Cards

    • In Singapore, business cards can be exchanged in any business or social occasion. According to World Travel Guide, individuals should give and receive business cards with two hands as a sign of common courtesy. It is also important to examine the business card carefully before putting it away and to treat the card with respect. This is indicative of how the business relationship will be treated.

    Conversation

    • Business conversation should stay polite. Most of the conversation should focus on things such as food, weather and the world economy. Questions about family are also acceptable.
