Bengal House Cat Information

The Bengal cat is a popular breed of house cat with a distinctive short-haired coat that comes in two patterns. Bengals are very active and range in size from medium to large, weighing from 10 to 20 pounds.

  1. Origin

    • Asian Leopard Cats, which are found in central Asia, were crossed with domestic cats by breeders trying to produce a cat that had the exotic appearance of the wild cat but a tamer temperament.

    Coat Patterns

    • There are two recognized Bengal coat patterns. The first consists of rosettes or spots of brown to charcoal or black on a different background color, which can range from brown to orange to ivory. There is also a marbled pattern, which combines rosettes with a domestic tabby pattern.

    Personality

    • Bengals are very intelligent, affectionate, and vocal, and they enjoy playing and interacting with people. They are loyal and tend to like children and other animals. They also like playing with water.

    Body Structure

    • Bengals are solid in appearance, muscular, and have long bodies. Their ears are small and rounded, and their whisker pads are pronounced.

    Origin of Name

    • The name Bengal comes from Feline bengalensis, the Latin name of the Asian Leopard Cat.
